The 'I Don't Have Time' Myth: How to Fit Fitness Into a Chaotic Life
"I just don't have the time."
As a coach, this is the number one reason women give me for why they haven't started their fitness journey, or why they keep falling off the wagon. And as a mom of three running a business, I completely understand where it comes from.
Between school drop-offs, work deadlines, making dinner, and trying to maintain a marriage, finding an extra hour in the day feels like trying to find a unicorn. You are exhausted, your schedule is packed, and the idea of adding a workout to your to-do list feels overwhelming.
But I need to tell you a hard truth, delivered with a lot of love: "I don't have time" is almost never about time. It is about priorities, energy management, and the false belief that fitness has to look a certain way to "count."
If you are waiting for your life to calm down before you prioritize your health, you will be waiting forever. Here is how we reframe the time myth and actually build sustainable habits in the middle of the chaos.
The 60-Minute Fallacy
The biggest trap women fall into is believing that a workout only counts if it is a grueling, 60-minute sweat session at a gym.
If you believe that is the minimum requirement, then of course you don't have time! Very few busy women have a spare 90 minutes (factoring in the commute and a shower) every single day.
But science tells us a different story. You do not need to live in the gym to achieve incredible body recomposition. In fact, three highly focused, 30-to-40-minute strength training sessions a week are more than enough to build lean muscle, boost your metabolism, and transform your physique.
When you stop aiming for perfection and start aiming for consistency, you suddenly realize that you do have 30 minutes. You just have to be intentional about how you use them.
Audit Your Screen Time
I challenge every client who tells me they don't have time to look at the screen time report on their phone.
Most of us are spending upwards of two hours a day scrolling through Instagram, watching TikToks, or binge-watching Netflix in the evening to "unwind." I am not judging this—we all need mental downtime. But we have to be honest with ourselves: we are choosing to spend our time consuming content rather than building our bodies.
If you can find 30 minutes to scroll, you can find 30 minutes to lift weights in your living room. It is not a lack of time; it is a lack of prioritization.
Energy Management vs. Time Management
Often, when we say we don't have time, what we really mean is we don't have energy.
By 6:00 PM, your time might technically be free, but your nervous system is fried. The thought of working out feels impossible. This is why managing your energy is far more important than managing your calendar.
If you know you are exhausted by the evening, you have to stop planning your workouts for 6:00 PM. You are setting yourself up to fail. You have to find the pocket of the day where you have the most control and the most energy. For many moms, this means waking up 30 minutes earlier. It isn't fun at first, but it guarantees that your workout happens before the chaos of the day derails your plans.
The Power of Habit Stacking
If you truly cannot find a dedicated 30-minute block, you have to utilize habit stacking. This means attaching a new fitness habit to an existing daily habit.
- While your morning coffee is brewing, do 5 minutes of mobility work.
- When you take the dog out, turn it into a brisk 15-minute walk.
- While you are watching your evening show, get on the floor and do a quick core circuit.
These micro-moments add up. They keep your metabolism active, they regulate your cortisol levels, and most importantly, they reinforce the identity of a woman who prioritizes her health.
You Are the Asset
You are the engine that keeps your family and your life running. If the engine breaks down, everything else stops.
Taking 30 minutes a day to build your physical and mental strength is not selfish. It is the most responsible thing you can do for the people who depend on you. Stop waiting for the perfect time, and start making the time you have work for you.
